Vintage 34mm IWC Cal 853
The IWC caliber 853 was introduced in the mid-1950s as part of the brand’s highly regarded family of automatic movements known as the “Pellaton” calibers, named after IWC’s technical director Albert Pellaton. Developed as an evolution of the earlier cal. 852, the 853 refined IWC’s innovative winding system, which used a bi-directional pawl mechanism to efficiently harness energy from the rotor’s motion — a design still used in modern IWC movements today. The caliber was produced from roughly 1958 to 1964 and often housed in classic models such as the Ingenieur and various dress references. Renowned for its durability, precision, and fine finishing, the cal. 853 represents a key chapter in IWC’s post-war engineering era, bridging the gap between traditional Swiss craftsmanship and the modern automatic wristwatch.
