When the Submariner first surfaced in the 1950s, it was developed purely for professionals and produced only in stainless steel. Gold had no place beneath the waves. But as the model gained prestige on land as well as sea, Rolex began to introduce more variants. By the 1980s, the two-tone Submariner had become a popular model. With its classic aluminum bezel insert and balanced proportions, ref. 16613 bridges the aesthetics of the modern generation with its past. Later models like the 116613 introduced ceramic bezels and larger “Maxi” hour markers and hands, yet many collectors still gravitate toward the ref. 16613 for its timeless design codes.
